World Class Scholars Application

What is World Class Scholars?

The World Class Scholars (WCS) program started in 1993 to form a partnership between local school districts, Grays Harbor College, and the Grays Harbor College Foundation. This partnership provides a pathway to a college education for students through Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties and provides scholarships to students who complete the program.

Grays Harbor College recruits and administers the WCS program, introducing local students to the concept of higher education, and a pathway to accessing higher education at Grays Harbor College. The Foundation funds the scholarship program through donations and grants and annually presents scholarship awards to student recipients who complete the program. In 1999, WCS received the Innovation in Education Award from the United States Senate and continues to be a vital program to students in the Twin Harbors region.

How Does It Work?

Students are invited to sign a contract committing to several scholastic, leadership, and community service goals to be met before their high school graduation. Grays Harbor College offers the commitment of entrance to GHC along with a scholarship award from the GHC Foundation to each World Class Scholar for their first year at GHC. The World Class Scholars Scholarship is available for 25 months after high school graduation.

Students can sign up for the World Class Scholars program at their schools in Grays Harbor & Pacific County.

The students commit to:

Graduate from high school with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better
Complete High School & Beyond graduation requirements, and World Class Scholars tasks & workshops
Demonstrate a variety of interpersonal skills, including working with groups, leadership roles, and respecting others
Complete at least 40 hours of community service and provide annual documentation of participation

That I will graduate from high school with a high school cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or above.
That I will acquire and be able to demonstrate examples of a variety of key interpersonal skills:
- Making contributions to group efforts by showing my involvement as a member of a team, program or organization;
- Accept leadership roles as part of this involvement and demonstrate my abilities to work well with others, share and teach skills as needed, negotiate and work towards agreement.
- Respect and appreciate the diversity of others, working easily with others regardless of their cultures, backgrounds, abilities and challenges.
That I serve the community where I live, meeting, completing and documenting volunteer commitments.
In a timely manner prior to the end of my senior year, I will submit completed admissions forms and any necessary financial aid applications to Grays Harbor College.

THE PROMISES:

In exchange for my personal commitment as a World Class Scholar, the school district makes the following promises to me:

To provide me with mentoring and a system for compiling and recording my progress while in the World Class Scholars program and also in identifying appropriate community service/volunteer activities.
In exchange for fulfilling the promises I make in this contract and for demonstrating my achievement in successfully meeting academic competencies, Grays Harbor College makes these promises to me:
To accept me into any academic program offered at Grays Harbor College for which I meet all admissions standards, granting appropriate college credits I may have earned while enrolled simultaneously in high school (Dual Credit, Running Start).
To grant me a partial tuition scholarship, to attend Grays Harbor College, through the Grays Harbor College Foundation in recognition of my achievements as a World Class Scholar.
Eligibility for this scholarship at GHC is for a period of 25 months after graduation from high school.
